But soon, there he was: Channing Kennedy cutting left to tackle, his face turned away from the camera. Then she came along: Channing Kennedy’s byline on a campus liberal blog. When I begrudgingly joined Facebook in 2007, the female Channing Kennedy was already there. That’s ridiculous, but it’s also true. Sure, I like watching a TV show, going to the cinema, or spending time with friends and family. But if those things aren’t accompanied by chocolate, popcorn, or a good meal followed by ice cream, the world’s in black and white rather than technicolor.

As overdramatic as it might sound… this is addiction. You’re not going to find a sugar addict passed out in a nightclub doorway after a binge, or stealing televisions to pay for their Maltesers habit. And I get why an an alcoholic or drug addict might look at someone complaining about how they can never get enough Cadbury’s as a wimp with no self-control.

But even though I know my love of sweet things is expanding my gut and strongly suspect it of exacerbating my urinary issues and screwing with my digestion, the thought of giving them up makes me feel desperate; desolate. I’ve tried in the past, including a year white-knuckling it through a candida diet and a detox that caused suicidal ideation and non-stop sh!tting. I used to wish there was some kind of programme to support people through the process, rather than the nutritionists I’d spoken to whose attitude was just “eat healthily, duh”.

Turns, out, there is a programme like that. I’m on it now. And, like most things that become an important part of my life, I’d come across it years earlier and instantly dismissed it… Read more

I watched this last week (I’d say “rewatched”...

I watched this last week (I’d say “rewatched” but the first time I saw it I didn’t realise how long it was, had to take the video back to Blockbuster and so missed the last 10 minutes) and is it me or is there really no story or tension, just a rambling series of events surrounded by one scene-stealing performance?

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. “You’re not special enough to survive a bad marriage” is my new favourite quote about marriage. We teach boys that girls and women are “less than” and that leads to violence by some and silence by many.
